Days 27-28: Wednesday, August 5 - Thursday, August 6, 1998

The night train to Nice wasn't bad. I slept for six of the ten hours. I didn't even have to show my passport coming into France. After looking for a room at all the budget hotels, I realized I would have to pay more than normal to get a single. $30 got me a room with a shower. I'm considering this my first splurge of the trip, and at the halfway point too. I went to the beach around 3 PM. It was a semi cool and cloudy day. The beach at Nice is all rocks. Though they are smooth, that offers little comfort for my increasingly sore feet. My sandals are cutting up my feet, and I'll have to stop wearing them for awhile. Though the water is a clear blue, when I went for a swim, there was lots of mulch and garbage floating around. It was really nasty. So I got out, and went for a walk in the parks. There, I found a square inhabited by a lot of skaters. Actually, it was a large circle with ledges and stairs. I observed some good skateboarding for about an hour, then left. I went back to the hotel, Little Louvre, for some rest. I've decided to do nothing in Nice but relax.

Around 7:30 PM I went to the train station to reserve a room in Barcelona. There, by sheer luck, I met Bill. He had been in Greece for nine days. Everything he said seemed to hold up with its party atmosphere. So he found a place to stay, and we went down toward the Promenade and got a table at a restaurant. I got the best ham and cheese sandwich. It was multi-level with tons of melted cheese! After that, I went to check out a Beach Party sponsored by Chez Wayne. It appeared to be an expensive fraternity party, so I went home to bed.

Earlier, while I was walking around where the skaters were, some guy asked me for my water. I gave him the bottle and turned to see another guy approach and offer me drugs. Then I turned to see some bitch slugging my water. Not to be stereotypical, but they were all black and the H20 crew was fucking obnoxious. I can't decide whether or not I'm happy to travel with Bill. Actually, I don't know if after Nice he wants to travel with me, though we both want to go to Ireland for awhile.
Nice Beach
Day 28

We are at the halfway point of the trip. I'm at the beach now. I've noticed a lot more people are topless here than at Lido. many, however are young, old, or attached. After dinner, we both realized Nice was too expensive, we didn't even bother with a bar. Bill was apparently low on Eurorail days and money, so he began to talk about hitchhiking, sleeping out, etc. Meanwhile, I'm on budget and fine with my train pass. So we parted again that night. It was probably a good thing we bumped into each other since he wouldn't have known Sam and Dave were leaving early. My cold seems to be going away. I'm down to a slight cough. Bill arrived in Nice with a cold, and he looked the same as I did when I got sick.
