The Thanksgiving holiday in the USA is one of my favorites. Family and friends get together, overindulge in good food (I’m missing my Mom’s awesome Hershey’s chocolate pie), and take time to reflect on how much they have to appreciate in their lives. It also means a 4-day weekend!
Here in Medellin, I’m maintaining a connection to that annual experience through the tweets about transportation snafus, and what people are eating. Don’t underestimate the collective power of these little messages to Americans separated from their families while traveling, living, and working abroad.
I have a lot to be grateful for in 2010. I’ve turned my passion for travel and blogging into a way to support myself. I still have trouble calling what I do “work” because I enjoy it so much. I couldn’t be doing it without the support of my parents, everyone reading right now, and the friendly site sponsors willing to share a portion of their budgets with me every month.
I’m always humbled by comments that I’ve inspired someone. The truth is I’m often just as inspired by other people sharing their adventures through blogs and social media. People like Sherry Ott who signed up for the 2011 Mongol Rally, Benny the Irish polyglot who is on a mission to show people how easy it can be to learn a new language, or the almost fearless Christine Gilbert who is traveling the world with her husband and baby to film a documentary.
When you’re feeling appreciative, it’s easy to start sharing with others. A few organizations I’ve supported recently include:
- Passports with Purpose (bid on prizes for as little as $10)
- Kiva (worldwide microloans for as little as $25)
- Angeles de Medellin (food and toy drive)
- Wikipedia (they’re a non-profit)
