It’s that time of year again, when the entire travel blogging community comes together for two weeks to promote the Passports with Purpose fundraiser.
Created in 2008 as a way to give something back to the places we collectively travel, Passports with Purpose continues to grow in size and ambition each year. I’m very proud to be both a blogger promoting it, as well as a donor.
Raising Money to Build Schools in Mali
Each year, Passports with Purpose partners with a different beneficiary.
For 2013, we’re raising money to help buildOn construct three new primary schools and fund three adult literacy programs in the Sikasso region of Mali, Africa.
“buildOn’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education.”
Our goal is to raise $115,000 in the next two weeks. If we can raise the money, they can build the schools. buildOn has a proven track record, having already built 200 schools in this region of Mali alone, allowing 24,000 kids to attend school each year.
By coming together over the next two weeks, from November 26 to December 9, the travel blogging community hopes to raise a substantial amount of money to help make a difference in Mali.
Is this an ambitious goal? Yes. Will we work together to raise awareness, as well as the money? Absolutely!
Last year, we exceeded our goal and raised $116,000 to build five wells in Haiti. You can learn more about past projects here.
How to Donate
One of the reasons I love participating with Passports with Purpose is they make it fun to donate.
Travel bloggers have been busy rounding up amazing travel-related prizes, which as of today (November 26), you can bid on for as little as $10.
Each $10 bid improves your odds of winning that prize. So if you want to donate $50, and have your heart set on a specific prize, then you can choose to bid five times for that prize.
Every dollar counts!
This year, Michael Tieso (Art of Adventuring) and I have agreed to offer a free lifetime membership to Travel Blog Success, our online course and community to help travelers learn to build, market, and make money from their blog(s).
Membership is worth $247, but can be won through Passports with Purpose for as little as a $10 donation.
To bid on the Travel Blog Success membership, click here.
Donations are being accepted through 11:59 PM (EST), December 9, 2013.
Prize winners will be notified soon after.
Terms and Conditions for the Travel Blog Success Prize
None! Once the fundraiser is over, we’ll notify the winner within a few days by email, and obtain the necessary information required to create the free membership.
While vying for prizes is fun, the real value in participating in Passports with Purpose is the chance to make a difference in the lives of children in Mali by offering them regular access to a primary school education, as well as adults to literacy programs.
One last thing. As a donor, I’ve won something two of the last three years. If you’re wondering how I afforded that penthouse in Cartagena for my birthday a few months ago, I have a prize sponsor from 2012’s Passports with Purpose to thank.
Donate today and maybe you’ll win big too!
