The Cheapest European Countries To Visit

Published: Nov 11, 2025 by Guest Blogger |

A trip to Europe doesn't have to be a luxury. You can enjoy the history, scenery, and cultures without breaking the bank by visiting the more reasonably priced parts of the continent; these include some of the cheapest places to visit in Europe. Effectively handling the entry processes is just as crucial to a good holiday as carefully picking your places.

Here are some of the cheapest vacation places in Europe where you can get the most for your money, along with a vital Schengen visa schedule to help you get started.

Southeastern Europe's Balkan area offers the best value. For a fraction of the price of popular places in Western Europe, these nations offer incredible beauty and cultural diversity.

Albania: With its pristine beaches along the Albanian Riviera and the striking peaks of the Accursed Mountains, Albania often ranks as one of the most affordable countries in Europe. With cheap hotel rooms frequently costing between $20 and $40 a night, you can have a nice trip here on a suggested daily budget of $30 to $50.

North Macedonia: Beautiful Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest lakes, and the lovely towns that surround it make up this hidden gem. The city of Skopje is filled with interesting historical sites and unique landmarks. With daily budgets ranging from $30 to $50 and offering reasonably priced, delicious local food, tourists can expect costs similar to those in Albania.

Montenegro: Although Kotor is famous for its stunning seaside beauty, you can also find great value in visiting Montenegro's national parks, such as Durmitor and Lovcen. A daily budget of $40-$60 is acceptable, especially if you visit in May or September, when hotel costs are lower. Montenegro is undoubtedly one of the cheapest places to visit in Europe.

Traveling to Eastern Europe reveals scenery and towns that are just as beautiful as those in the West, but at a more affordable price, making them some of the cheapest places to visit in Europe.

Bulgaria: Bulgaria is one of Europe's best holiday deals. You can walk through gorgeous mountain ranges, see the beautiful Rila Monastery, and see the quaint city of Plovdiv. About $40 a day is plenty for a tourist.

Romania: With its historic towns, guarded churches, and the rugged Carpathian Mountains, Transylvania is at the heart of Romania's allure. With a daily hiking budget of around $40, it's a place that offers excellent value for your money.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: The cities of Sarajevo and Mostar are renowned for their rich history and culture, despite not being among the most affordable travel destinations presented here. However, they can still be considered when seeking the cheapest places to visit in Europe.

To help you compare, the daily prices for different reasonably priced places are outlined in the table below.

Your Gateway to Europe: The Schengen Visa Checklist

A Schengen visa, which allows entry to 29 European countries, is essential for many tourists to Europe. The filing of correct and thorough paperwork is vital to the success of an application.

To help you get started, below is a simple Schengen visa checklist:

  • Valid Passport: It must include at least two blank pages and be good for at least three months after your planned exit from the Schengen region.
  • Completed Application Form: The form must be completed and signed.
  • Passport Photos: Provide current photos that adhere to specific standards, such as having the right face measurements and a well-lit setting.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Send in a welcome letter or hotel plans for the duration of your trip.
  • Travel Itinerary: Include a daily plan of your events and tickets for round-trip trips.
  • Travel Medical Insurance: It is necessary to provide proof of insurance that covers at least €30,000 (approximately $35,000) for medical emergencies and repatriation throughout the entire Schengen region.
  • Proof of Financial Means: To show you can support yourself while moving, provide bank records from the last three months.

It might be challenging to handle these papers. Using an expert tool like Atlys can simplify the process. It helps with every part of the process, from ensuring the paperwork is complete and providing guides to booking visa meetings, which can be one of the most challenging aspects.

With any luck, this article will help you plan a unique and budget-friendly visa checklist for Schengen travel around Europe. By combining wise travel choices with careful visa planning, you'll be well on your way to experiencing the best of Europe without the high costs.
