Founded in 1541, Santa Fe de Antioquia is one of the best preserved colonial pueblos in Colombia.
Santa Fe was the former capital of Antioquia before that honor was bestowed upon nearby Medellin in 1826.
I recently spent a weekend in this old pueblo, which is a short 1.5 to 2-hour ($5) bus ride north of Medellin.
Showing up without accommodation in mind, I ended up staying at the beautiful, new Hotel Patio del Castellano (Cra 9 #10-34).
I like this photo because it captures both the pretty hotel pool and courtyard, as well as the green Andes mountains that surround the pueblo.
Situated at a low elevation, the hot and humid temperatures more resemble what you'll find on the Caribbean coast than Medellin.
