As I shared last Thursday in Would You Accept a Free Trip to Colombia, I was asked to head down there next month for 2 weeks to see the best the country has to offer and blog about my experiences. I was 99% sure everything was in order, however I learned how important it is to be 100% sure about a project before announcing it!
A small issue will prevent me from going down there. I won't go into detail, however I do expect to stay on board in a supportive role for the chosen US-based blogger. I am still very excited about it all, and I look forward to sharing more as soon as possible. It's no secret I want the best for Colombians after my experience living there, and if I can use blogging as a platform to foster tourism to benefit their economy, I am happy to do so.
For the other travel bloggers reading, is there a particular country you try to support or highlight more than the rest in your writing?
I’d support any country that would involve a free trip! :D
No seriously… I don’t think so… Every country I’ve been to has offered something different I don’t think I’ve been to a country that I didn’t like. Weird I know. I think it is because I enjoy different countries for very different reasons.
It’s that question people ask when they know you’ve done a lot of traveling … “What was your favourite place” there just isn’t an answer to that.

I agree about every country offering something unique, and I have great stories from all that I’ve visited, however a few certainly stick out more than the rest for me. The places I would return to in a heartbeat. To placate the people asking me the “favorite place” question, I began answering Nepal…and later added Colombia to the answer.
I loved my Cambodian experience, and appreciated Laos, though I don’t intend to return to either in the foreseeable future. The islands of Thailand, I could return to tomorrow!

Yeah it’s easy to feel at home on one of the Thai beaches! :D
I agree that if I’ve been to places in Cambodia and Laos I’m unlikely to go back… which isn’t the case with Thailand.

Mexico, definitely. It was a holiday there in 2007 that inspired me to take a full yearlong RTW trip. It was then the first stop of my RTW trip. And I adore the place. Six countries in, it{s still my favourite, for so many reasons.
I also feel particularly strongly about supporting it, as with teh double blow of the swine flu and overly negative coverage of the drugs war in the US media has meant tourism is down significantly.
I have met so many Americans in other Latin American countries who have been amazed that I went to Mexico as “it’s so dangerous right now”, which apparently is the impression much of the US media makes. The fact is, in the vast majority of the country it’s not, but people don’t realise that and they get scared away. So I’ve made a real effort to show the positive side of the country in my blog posts.

Geoff – I could tell from reading your posts that Mexico had an affect on you. I’m definitely a little more curious as a result. Isn’t it amazing how the media can make a whole country as big as Mexico sound like a dangerous proposition as a result of regional troubles?

Well your posts on Colombia had the same effect on me!
Yeah, it´s sad the way the media has such a big impact, but it means from now I will always do more research myself on blogs and the like next time there is somewhere I want to go that the media deems únsafe
