5 Things Luxury Travelers Should Know About Versailles Before They Go

Published: Apr 17, 2025 by Guest Blogger | Leave a Comment

Versailles is one of the more underrated destinations for luxury travelers in France. Sure, Paris and the French Riviera both have their respective places on the list of top destinations. Yet, what is it about Versailles that makes it worth visiting? We'll discuss five key things you'll want to know about it as a luxury traveler before booking.

Luxury travelers are constantly seeking the next best adventure, particularly when they desire a high-end experience. We're here to tell you that your Versailles experience may be fit for a royal (not literally, but close enough). Let's get started with the key information below.

Versailles Tips

1. Sleep Where French Royalty Once Did

Hotels such as the 5-star Airelles hotel in Versailles (also known by its official name, Airelles Chateau de Versailles, Le Grande Controle) were the premier places for French royalty and nobility to stay. Believe it or not, you are staying on the grounds of a royal palace. In a sense, you can sleep like a king or a queen in a place like the Airelles.

This building was restored to maintain its 17th-century look and luster. It features 14 rooms and suites, each equipped with numerous amenities. It also offers fine dining options, such as the Alain Ducasse restaurant, where you can savor delicious dishes like roasted free-range chicken breast with French-style green peas. Top it off with a chocolate dessert fit for royalty, and it will be a delightful experience.

2. Go On Private Tours

Versailles offers private tours for luxury travelers, giving them the best access to some of the most popular tourist attractions. You can tour the Chateau early in the morning or after hours. Expert guides will also personalize the experience through narration while you explore areas that the crowds might not get to see at all.

Aside from the Chateau, you can also check out other places in Versailles for a private tour, including the Royal Opera House and the King's Private Apartments. In other words, you get to go on exclusive tours to places that might not be open to the public, all in a bespoke, custom-made experience that is second to none. It sure beats dealing with crowds.

3. A Dining Experience Like No Other

Already, we've mentioned the Ore-Ducasse au Chateau. Yet, if you want another place to get authentic French cuisine, La Table du 11 is a can't-miss, especially if you are looking for a place that creates dishes you never knew existed. The best part is that this restaurant features fresh, locally sourced ingredients, further elevating the fine dining experience to an entirely new level.

We dare say that Versailles gives a run for its money regarding the fine dining scene. The question becomes whether or not there's a place that could be better than whatever restaurant you've visited in Paris (assuming you've been there).

4. Visit The Hall of Mirrors and Gardens of Versailles

Two delightful tourist attractions can combine to create an unforgettable experience. The Hall of Mirrors inside the Palace was a place where French royalty held receptions for foreign visitors, hosted royal weddings, and was the site of a historical event—the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I in 1919.

After you visit the Hall of Mirrors, you'll want to check out the luscious Gardens of Versailles. The garden is 1,977 acres (800 hectares) of manicured lawns, beautiful sculptures and fountains, geometrical layouts, and much more. Here, you will also find the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon palaces.

You'll also find Marie Antoinette's retreat known as the Queen's Hamlet. A great deal of history has unfolded on these grounds, making it worth exploring as a luxury traveler.

5. Timing Is Everything When It Comes To Exclusive Events

Versailles offers numerous opportunities for exclusive events throughout the year. However, it's about the timing of when you want to book. We have some ideas of when you should consider booking, especially around the time of certain events.

We suggest booking your trip during spring (April to June) or fall (September to October). Weather-wise, it's comfortable, and it's also an ideal time to avoid the summer crowds.

Nevertheless, there are also events that you can check out. They include The Night Fountains Show (Grandes Eaux Nocturnes), numerous balls and masquerades in the Hall of Mirrors, and seasonal art exhibitions that are breathtaking to see.

Final Thoughts

Luxury travelers know that France is the perfect place for a high-end experience. Yet, Versailles might steal the show - even if you travel to Paris before or after your experience here.

Now that you know these five things listed above, maybe it's time to add them to your list of "must-visit" destinations. Do not miss out on an experience that may rival a royal gala and much more.
