Help me decide how long to spend in Bali, Indonesia! I have to decide soon so I can book my onward travel. Factors to consider include the fact that I will have been on the road for 2 months, not having spent more than 5 nights in any one place. The first 3 countries I visited could turn out to be the most expensive of my trip.

Such a hard call of course yo want to stay a while but i also think once you get in the grove you will start spending less you don't necessarily have to do all of the tourist activity's i would say you have to ask your self the one question i always think about is (do i want to see more of the world or do i want to do all that this particular part has to offer) in the end i want to go every where so i always do less in each spot and no mater how much of a good time i had i always think i could have done more or missed something but i get home and am like i did so much whew that was long i don't think it will help but i hope it does

I've been asking myself that question more often in Australia. I have to get you guys up to date! :)

Hummmm... You should make sure you don't burn yourself out with too much travel, perhaps find a cheap place to rent and stay put for a couple of weeks? Frequently renting someplace for a few weeks is comparable in cost to staying in a hostel for a few days and then you'll be able to cook and relax a bit easier. Of course, that will make meeting new folks harder....
I look forward to hearing what you decide, but Bali should be cheaper!

Good point - it might be nice to rent a flat for a little while.

Dave,I would consider heading further east in Indo. Chill out on Gili Air, which is close to Lombok for a week, do some snorkling, maybe some diving, you could climb Gunung Rinjani, then a boat trip from Lombok to Flores with a stop at Komodo and Rinca. From there you could head to Bajawa and Kelimutu and then fly back to Bali from Labuanbajo on Flores. If you have any questions about that part of Indo, then let me know! It's an amazing place...

Thanks Boris - I know you've traveled quite a bit around that area. I've heard a bit about Lombok - which I know is another island nearby. Despite my readers tendency to want me to stay for only 10 days, I was considering 3 weeks! :)

Get there and then decide, Dave. Its an awesome place (Indo as a whole) and u may want to do it more justice by staying longer. In my opinion it beats the 'usual backpacker haunts' further up in SE Asia hands down.

3 weeks should be enough if you are only planning for Bali & Lombok. Definately you gotta visit the 3 Gilis too.
Basic accomodation around Poppies start from about USD 5!
I wont blame you if you change your mind n decide to stay there FOREVER!
