The Best International eSIM for Your 2025 Travels

Published: May 31, 2025 by Mariana Rodriguez | Leave a Comment

Staying connected when traveling should not be complicated or expensive. Mariana Rodriguez, a digital nomad who has tried several eSIMs while working remotely in Europe and the United Kingdom. After testing many possibilities, Sim Local stood out for its unrivaled speed, cost, and dependability.

If you're planning a trip in 2025, here's everything you need to know to avoid roaming costs and enjoy speedy internet, no matter where your journey takes you.

Why use an eSIM?

eSIMs are the best option for staying connected when traveling abroad, as they're environmentally friendly, offer an excellent internet connection, even in remote locations, and are often cheaper than paying for roaming.

Using an international eSIM is simple. You can do it through an app—I recommend the Sim Local app—or their website, www.simlocal.com. Remember to check that your cell phone is compatible with eSIM technology. The list is in this link.

What is the best eSIM card for travel?

During my travels, I have had the opportunity to test several eSIMs. I liked Sim Local quite a lot. Not only does it have better reviews than Airalo and Holafly, but in our experience, the connection at the destination has been much more stable and faster. You can tell that they work with the best operators in each country, which makes a significant difference in connectivity.

Sim Local offers excellent plans, not only compared to expensive roaming but also compared to other eSIMs, which could make it the most affordable eSIM option. I especially appreciate that most destinations include not just data, but also calls and SMS—something many other eSIMs don't always offer.

On the other hand, Sim Local stands out for its excellent prices and plans, which include unlimited data and 10 GB of full-speed data per day, in contrast to other providers that offer only 500 MB or 1 GB per day. Additionally, they offer regional plans for travelers visiting multiple destinations, eliminating the need to change eSIMs in each country.

With Sim Local, I never had to worry about switching SIMs or losing service. The unlimited plan with daily full-speed data made a huge difference during work calls and uploads.

Mariana Rodriguez, digital nomad

I highly recommend Sim Local eSIMs to travelers because they're currently among the most competitive options on the market in terms of price, quality, and additional benefits. Sim Local has a presence in most airports in Europe and some in the United States, which is a significant advantage.

If you arrive at a destination and need help, you can always approach one of their stores at major airports, although I don't anticipate that you will need to. The installation is simple.

Popular destinations like the UK, France, Spain, and Japan can find local options with major carriers like EE, Three, and Lyca in Europe. Thus, they can directly access their travel plans at great prices, with the guarantee of a reliable connection.

How can I buy and install my Sim Local travel eSIM?

Below, I share a brief guide on installing an eSIM, specifically Sim Local, which has been very useful during our travels.

1. Download the app

Go to where you download new apps on your mobile device (App Store for iPhone users, and Google Play for Android) and search for Sim Local. Once you've found it, download it.

2. Sign up for Sim Local

After downloading the app, log in to register. You will likely receive a message requesting your permission for Sim Local to make and manage phone calls from your mobile device. You must choose the allow option.

3. Choose the country you will visit

Once you have created your account, you will return to the app's main screen, where you can choose the destination where you plan to use the eSIM. When you select the country, you will see several options for internet packages. Choose the one that best suits you.

4. Make the payment

When you select the destination you will visit and the package that suits you best, you must choose a payment option. You can pay with Google Pay, Apple Pay, a credit or debit card, or PayPal.

Note: If you have a discount code, please enter it before completing your payment. If you use the code GOBACKPACKING, you will enjoy an incredible promotion.

5. Install and activate the eSIM

When you pay, you will receive an email with all the purchase details, including the eSIM codes required for installation.

First, navigate to your cell phone's configuration section and select the "Connections" or "Cellular Network" option. Then, go to the SIM option and choose the option to add an eSIM.

You will then be prompted to select how to add the eSIM. You can scan the QR code or the code you received by email.

When scanning the QR code, you will be prompted to add the Sim Local eSIM. Add it and wait for it to be installed. Once installed, you can view both your regular SIM and the eSIM and assign each a name to avoid confusion.

6. Enjoy your incredible speed and coverage.

Enjoy the eSIM and your trip. In the Sim Local app, you can monitor your gigabytes consumed, giving you more control over how your package is used.

You're ready to go! Don't wait until you get to the airport to figure out your data. Download the Sim Local app, choose your destination, and activate your eSIM in minutes. Use code GOBACKPACKING for a special discount – it's the smartest travel move you'll make this year.
