Every British passport has an expiry date printed inside. In Spain, that date can mislead you. Since Brexit, Schengen rules set their own limit, often months earlier. The gap has caught out plenty of British travelers at Spanish airports. Renewing in Spain takes longer than renewing in the UK, leaving less room for error.

What Passport Validity Rules Apply When Entering Spain
Since January 2021, Spain treats UK passports like any other non-EU passport. Two tests apply on arrival day. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before that date and remain valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.
Older passports tend to fail the first test. Until September 2018, HM Passport Office carried up to nine unused months from old passports to new ones. Some passports show an expiry date more than 10 years after issue. Schengen ignores those extra months.
Take a passport issued in August 2017 that expires in May 2028. For entry into Spain, it stops working in August 2027.
The second test depends on the trip. Flying into Málaga for a fortnight? You need three clear months after the return flight, so about three and a half months left on the day you fly out. Short-stay visitors get 90 days in any 180, covering the whole Schengen area.
Airline staff check at the desk. Border officers verify again on arrival. Either can stop you. GOV.UK has a passport checker for travel to Europe that runs both tests against your exact travel date, so use it before booking.
How the Rules Differ for British Residents in Spain
British citizens who lived in Spain before the end of 2020 and registered under the Withdrawal Agreement hold a TIE residence card. The 90/180-day limit does not apply, and border officers should not stamp their passports. People who moved later on a visa, such as the non-lucrative or digital nomad visa, also carry a TIE.
A TIE does not make the passport optional. You still need a valid one to travel, and Spanish residency paperwork, including TIE renewals, usually asks to see it. If it expires during an application, the process can stall. Many residents renew about six months early rather than wait for a trip to force the issue.
Trips beyond Spain bring their own rules. Indonesia, for one, wants six months of validity on arrival. That's stricter than Schengen.
What to Do When Your Passport Is Close to Expiry in Spain

Skip the consulate. British consulates in Spain do not issue passports. Every renewal goes through HM Passport Office in the UK, and from Spain there are two main ways to apply.
The standard route is the GOV.UK online application for renewing from abroad. You fill in the form and upload a photo, then send the old passport to the UK by post or courier-the new one returns by courier to your address in Spain.
While HM Passport Office has your old passport, you cannot travel outside Spain. Delivery time adds to processing time. It is the cheapest option and works well if you have months to spare.
The HM Passport Office runs a fast-track service. It is only available in the UK, and applications from abroad follow the standard overseas timeline.
Some agents, including ASAP Passports, offer UK passport renewal from Spain and handle the UK side of the application. ASAP Passports is a private, registered UK passport agent. HM Passport Office still issues the passport. DHL collects your old passport from an address in Spain, so no consulate visit is needed.
Expect to pay more than the standard passport fee. Most people who use this service have an upcoming flight or residency appointment.
What if the trip is days away? Neither route may be quick enough. A British national whose passport has expired or does not meet Schengen requirements can apply for an Emergency Travel Document through GOV.UK. It covers one specific journey. You will still need to renew properly afterward.
How to Time a Renewal From Spain
Start with the earliest date that matters to you. Visitors should check their next entry into Spain and run both Schengen tests against it. Residents usually focus on their next TIE renewal or trip abroad.
Then work backward. A standard overseas application needs processing time plus round-trip courier time. A rejected photo or missing document delays everything. Six months covers most delays. With under two months left, you will likely choose between a faster route or new travel dates.
Look at the issue date as well. It is easy to miss. If your passport was issued before September 2018 and carries extra months, your Schengen limit is 10 years from issue. That can be almost a year before the printed expiry date.
Once the new passport arrives, the number changes. Update it on any flights already booked. Spanish banks holding a copy of your old passport will usually ask for the new one.
